Simpang

I gave a packet of chocolates to Zani, my favourite prata bomb maker, last night. It was all very awkward; I wished I'd gotten a more appropriate gift (cigs, say), and he looked like he wished I didn't single him out so much. I suppose his colleagues will tease him mercilessly for having an admirer, or maybe he's just plain shy.

He likes me, I really think he does. He brings me prata bomb without me having to order, and the curry he brings is filled with fish bits (so says Cin). Once, he served a prata bomb made by somebody else, and when I expressed disappointment that it was not made by him he actually went back and specially made another one for me. It must have started with me going directly to him to declare that I'd only eat prata bomb if it's made by him. In turn, he treats me like a special customer. And therefore I brought him the chocs.

I like the whole business of showing kindness to each other. It makes me feel good about myself, but more importantly it reminds me the reciprocal nature of human decency. I like to think that I made a difference in Zani's life because I went to him and praised his prata making skills. I am embarassed but secretly pleased by his superb service whenever I come around. It keeps my hopes alive, that one day I'd be genuinely appreciated at work by my bloody customers. Maybe one of them will bring me a packet of chocolates.
