So, I flunked the kebaya round again, the third time now. Fewer people are pointing out the fact that Kym Ng took 8 tries to become an SQ stewardess. And I'm thankful to them for not mindlessly telling me to 'try again, it's ok, must persevere!'. Logically I shouldn't let an interview as superficial as the uniform fit get to me, but it really takes a toll on my sense of self-worth each time I leave the waiting room full of ecstatic girls not knowing what's wrong with me.
Only this time it was a little worse flunking out, because a primary school friend K made it through. She happens to be Elgin's crush during JC, for the longest time. I'm a total bitch, but when I saw her at the walk-in interview I never imagined she might make it to the kebaya round, let alone pass it on her first try. When I told Elgin that I met K at the walk-in interview, he too expressed his surprise that K would try out for the position. I suppose she just didn't fit into the stereotype of stewardess-wannabes. Which is good, come to think of it *glum*.
Of course I had to give Elgin hell for this.
"I tell you I (in a fairly hysterical, screechy manner), if K gets into SQ, I'm going to stay in Bahrain, marry a rich old oil sheikh and never come back."
"Why don't you dump me for K, I think a SQ stewardess girlfriend would be a great improvement from one that cannot get into SQ after three tries."
"There must be something wrong with the way I look, is that why you liked K back in JC and me only later?!?!"
Poor Elgin had to put up with my caustic comments the entire night. He was super sweet about it, mumuring "so vindictive leh, you" under his breath only when he thought I couldn't hear him over my rantings. I am grateful to him for his easy-going ways, it's just that I don't express it very often or very well.
It's going to be interviews galore this weekend, Emirates on Sat and Qatar on Sun. I'm on a ball!
